Want a long life? Americans, wake-up call.

Life expectancy in the United States has been declining and it’s bad. It’s hard to believe but it’s true.

In a recent Washington Post article, here are two fast takeaways about the State of America today:

  • “The data continued the longest sustained decline in expected life span at birth in a century, an appalling performance not seen in the United States since 1915 through 1918.” Consider this – that time period included World War I and a pandemic!
  • “Life expectancy is improving in many places in the world.” But it’s declining in the United States?!

What’s causing this? Obviously, there are many issues including drug use and suicide – but what are the causes that lead people to the use of drugs or make people think of suicide? I believe two of them are Age Discrimination (Ageism) and Wage Inequality. Have you ever been unemployed? No? You’re lucky – but wait! I bet you know someone who has been don’t you? Mom, Dad, Uncle, Friend? Can you think for a moment what was it like for them? It’s lonely, its depressing and it’s brutal on people financially. People once happy become sad and way too many Americans go through this alone.

If you have gone through it, you know exactly what kinds of fears and mental anguish occur, minute by minute, hour by hour and days turn into weeks and months.

We have a hiring and employment system deeply broken and that operates under false beliefs like middle and older people are not capable anymore. Age discrimination is against federal law, yet companies blatantly do it.  Are you working for a company that is breaking U.S. law, that’s discriminating against older Americans – and maybe soon they will be discriminating against YOU?

It’s destroying our country.  AND GUESS WHAT?  The statistics show chances are excellent it’s going to catch up with you too.

Don’t think so? Not your problem?  Better think again.
